Despite its obvious rarity, the 1858-S is a curiously overlooked issue in the San Francisco eagle series. It is not as rare as the 1859-S or 1860-S but it is far harder to find than the 1856-S and 1857-S. There are around 60-70 1858-S eagles known with most in the VF-EF range. It is likely that fewer than 10 properly graded AU’s exist and I have never seen or heard of one which graded higher than AU55. The PCGS/CAC EF45 which I sold earlier this year was the first 1858-S eagle I had offered in many years.

This fresh-to-the-market example shows a good amount of luster and has nice natural rose splashes atop medium yellow-gold surfaces. As with virtually all known 1858-S eagles, this piece is somewhat “ticky” but none of the marks are deep or detracting. I can’t recall having seen a better 1858-S and I like this coin more than two of three examples which have been graded AU55 by PCGS (this service shows a population of three in this grade with exactly zero finer).

No AU55 1858-S eagle has been sold at auction since December 2009. In May 2008, an NGC AU55 realized $11,500 and all the way back in April 2006, an NGC AU55 realized $13,800.

While many rare No Motto San Francisco eagles have appreciated in price in this last five+ years, the 1858-S remains curiously overlooked. In nearly any other gold series, this would be a $20,000++ coin in AU55.
