In the not-so-distant past, the 1858 was regarded as one of the key issues in the entire Liberty Head eagle series. Although this is hard to believe now, it was accorded a higher price than such current collector favorites as the 1864-S and 1875 and B.Max Mehl, the famous Texas dealer, was an enthusiastic proponent of this date. Only 2,521 were produced and there are around four to five dozen known today. The 1858 is now a forgotten rarity; ironic, given the sudden popularity of the Liberty Head eagle series.

This is one of the few 1858 eagles that I have seen with natural color and both sides show pleasing medium russet hues. There is some slight darkening of the color in the left obverse field and a reverse patch of dirt over the A in STATES serves as identification and is a hallmark of this coin’s originality. The overall eye appeal is decidedly above average and if you are at all familiar with this date, you are aware that most 1858 eagles are not attractive at all.

There have been just two auction appearances for AU50 1858 eagles since the beginning of 2005, one in a PCGS holder and one in an NGC holder. Both coins brought $10,350 with one record occuring in 2005 and the other in 2008; ancient history considering how much more of a collector focus this series is now receiving.
