Due to the ubiquity of the similarly-dated double eagle, it is generally believed that the 1857-S eagle is common. This is not the case and fewer than 150-175 are known from the original mintage of just 26,000 coins. When available, this date is generally seen in VF and EF grades and it is very scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58. There are around four or five known in Uncirculated with the finest of these a PCGS MS64 from the S.S. Central America which last sold for $53,188 in February 2009.

This very lustrous example shows just a slight amount of wear but there are some abrasions on the obverse which limit the grade. The color is a pleasing natural medium orange-gold with some lighter rose shadings in the protected areas. A few very light hairlines can be seen around and to the left of the date but this coin’s naked-eye appearance is very impressive.

There have been just three auction appearances for this issue in AU55 since early 1999. The last 1857-S eagle in PCGS AU55 to sell was a CAC-approved piece which brought $4,600 in January 2010. Before this, a PCGS AU55 sold for $6,038 in July 2008.

All early date San Francisco eagles are very scarce in the higher AU grades and this 1857-S should work well for a specialized collector seeking a first-rate example of this famous date.
