HIGH CONDITION CENSUS 1857-O EAGLE

Only two No Motto eagles from New Orleans are currently unknown in Uncirculated: the low mintage 1841-O and the underappreciated 1857-O. The 1857-O is, in fact, a very scarce issue in all grades with an estimated surviving population of fewer than 100 coins from an original mintage of only 5,500. I regard it as the third rarest No Motto eagle from New Orleans after the 1841-O and the 1859-O.

This amazing example is the second finest 1857-O eagle I have seen or sold, trailing only the PCGS AU58 James Stack/Ron Brown coin which last sold for $40,250 as Heritage 10/06: 2934; this coin is now in a tightly-held California collection. It shows splendid natural russet colors on the obverse and reverse over very slightly worn surfaces. This piece likely saw no actual circulation and its surfaces are far cleaner than usual for this date with only a few moderate contact marks visible in the fields.

In addition to the aforementioned James Stack PCGS AU58 and the present example, there is only one other PCGS AU58: the Simpson/Hall coin which last sold for $25,300 as Stacks 1/09: 1377.

This coin represents a major opportunity for the advanced collector of New Orleans eagles.

CAC has approved two in this grade and none finer.
