Large S mintmark.

As a date, the 1856-S is among the more available early eagles from the San Francisco mint but like all the pre-1878 issues, it is very rare in Uncirculated. It is estimated that just five to seven exist in Uncirculated with the finest being a PCGS MS63 from the SS Central America that sold cheaply as Christies 12/00: 73 for $19,550; another SSCA example, this graded MS62, sold for the same amount in a May, 2005 auction.

This unquestionably “new” example shows the peculiar “dished” appearance that is seen on many 1856-S eagles. This does not impact the strike or details and this is a sharp, well-detailed coin with nice warm golden-orange color. There are a fair number of small nicks in the fields but none are out of keeping with the assigned grade and the luster is far above average for the issue.

The only MS61 example to ever sell at auction is this coin; see the pedigree citation below.

San Francisco eagles have become actively collected in the last few years and this is perhaps chance to acquire an Uncirculated 1856-S that most collectors will have.

Ex Heritage 4/14: 6596 where it sold for $9988.
