CHOICE AU 1856-S EAGLE

Medium S mintmark.

While not as well known as the first-year-of-issue 1854-S, the 1856-S is in fact scarcer in higher grades. It is generally seen in EF and the lowest AU grades and it becomes rare in properly graded AU58; especially with natural color and choice surfaces. In Uncirculated, the 1856-S eagle is very rare with four or five known, the best of which is a PCGS MS63 from the S.S. Central America treasure.

This fresh-to-the-market example has seen no real circulation but does have some friction on the high spots after having been shipped to Europe. The obverse is choice and lustrous with nice fields overlaid with rich rose and orange-gold color; the reverse shows some scuffs in the upper field.

The last NGC AU58 with CAC approval to sell at auction brought $3,560 as Stacks Bowers 11/15: 21096.

CAC has approved seven in this grade with five finer.
