CONDITION CENSUS 1855-S EAGLE

The 1855-S is among the rarest early date No Motto eagles from the San Francisco mint. Only 9,000 examples were struck and the Gold Rush economy was not kind to this issue as just 70-80 survive, mostly in lower grades and nearly always showing signs of heavy circulation and numismatic abuse. The are an estimated dozen or so in AU, mostly in the 50 to 53 range. Properly graded AU55 and finer coins are excessively rare and this issue remains unknown in Uncirculated.

This fresh to the market example has the skin and body of an AU55 but it has been conservatively graded by PCGS due to the presence of a few abrasions, most notably a horizontal mark in the right obverse field. There is considerable natural luster below attractive russet color and this is one of the few 1855-S eagles known which hasn’t been stripped of its originality. This is one of the two or three best pieces I have seen and it is solidly within the Condition Census for the date.

Only one PCGS AU53 has sold at auction since June 2001 and it was a low end, dipped out piece which sold for $6,325 as Heritage 10/10: 4883.

The few higher graded 1855-S eagles which are known are tied up in tightly-held collections and this is likely the best which will be available to collectors for some time. An important coin for the Liberty Head eagle specialist.

CAC has approved one in this grade and one finer (55). Only five examples of this date have been approved.
