The 1854-S eagle is numismatically significant as the first-year-of-issue for the Liberty Head design. It is the only high denomination coin dated 1854-S which isn’t scarce to rare (or in the case of the half eagle, a seven figure mega-rarity). The 1854-S eagle is common in grades up to AU55 but properly graded AU58 pieces are very scarce and this date is extremely rare in Uncirculated with just three or so known.

I have handled a number of nice AU58 1854-S eagles in the last five years and this example may be the single nicest. It is lightly worn and totally original with attractive rich orange-gold splashes over a medium russet undertone. The strike is better than average with bold detail at the centers and the fields lack the deep, detracting marks which are so common on this issue. It is hard to imagine that a nicer AU58 example exists.

No PCGS AU58 1854-S eagle has been auctioned since February 2007. Two NGC/CAC AU58′s have been sold and they brought $5,170 in January 2016 and $5,582 in April 2014. I was recently offered a PCGS/CAC AU58 by a knowledgeable wholesale dealer for $6,250 and his coin wasn’t nearly as choice as the present example.

If available, an Uncirculated 1854-S eagle would cost at least five times what I am asking for this piece and I doubt if it would have as much eye appeal.

CAC has approved 11 in this grade with just one finer.
