SURPRISINGLY RARE UNCIRCULATED 1854 EAGLE

The 1854 eagle is not the common date that most casual collectors suspect it is and this is especially true in the higher AU grades and in Uncirculated. I believe that there are fewer than 10 known in Uncirculated and most are in the MS60 to MS62 range. I have never personally seen an 1854 eagle which graded higher than MS62 although PCGS shows a population of two in MS64.

This fresh-to-the-market example is well struck save for the curl behind the ear which is not fully brought up. The luster is excellent with a nice frosty texture and this piece has not been dipped or processed as evidenced by the nice natural yellow-gold and russet color. There are some light handling marks in the obverse fields and a cluster of small marks on the reverse below the E in AMERIC which limit the grade. The eye appeal is far better than average for the date and grade.

There are only two APR’s for MS61 1854 eagles since 1999 and neither are for a PCGS coin. The last record for an NGC MS61 was $6,325 for Heritage 3/10: 2427. No PCGS MS62 has sold since January 2007. According to my records, this is the first Uncirculated 1854 eagle which I have ever offered for sale (!)

I am often asked to suggest collecting fields for new gold specialists and to my way of thinking, a set of higher grade No Motto eagles from Philadelphia would be a challenging endeavor. This 1854 would be a good start for such a collection.
