VERY SCARCE PCGS/CAC AU55 1845-O HALF EAGLE

The 1845-O half eagle becomes very scarce in properly graded AU55, despite population figures which suggest otherwise. These figures are inflated by resubmissions and many of the pieces I have seen in "55" holders are, in my opinion, overgraded.

This example is spot-on for the grade with excellent frosty luster and natural honey-gold color with a few deeper areas on the lower obverse. The surfaces are very clean while the detail is bold for the issue.

No PCGS AU55 1845-O half eagle has sold at auction since May 2000 (!). A nice NGC AU55 which was not approved by CAC was bid up to $3,819 as Heritage 1/14: 6649.

It would not be easy to find a nicer AU-graded 1845-O half eagle than this and such a coin would be expensive.

CAC has approved 3 in this grade with 11 finer.
