VERY RARE PCGS AU58 1843-D SMALL D HALF EAGLE

Variety 9-F; Small D mintmark. Designated by PCGS.

This variety uses the same sized mintmark as found on the 1842-D Small Date half eagles. Around 10% of the known 1843-D half eagles show a Small D mintmark and this variety is rare in all grades. It is designated by PCGS and advanced collectors of Dahlonega gold actively seek this variety as part of their set(s).

The coin itself is a nice lemon-gold slider with strong luster and light, even wear which is confined to the high spots. The surfaces are choice and the strike is bold, both for the date and for the variety.

A PCGS AU53 example of this variety sold for $5,405 as Heritage 7/15: 4475 and the finest known to me, a PCGS MS62, realized $16,100 back in September 2008.

A very important coin for the advanced specialist and more than likely one of the finest known of this variety.
