CHOICE PCGS/CAC AU55 1798 HALF EAGLE

BD-2, R-5. Large 8, 13 Star Reverse.

Only two 18th century half eagles are semi-affordable and the 1798 Heraldic Eagle reverse is the most available issue, making it ideal for the collector who seeks a nice quality piece but can't afford a 1795 or 1796/5. The Large 8, 13 Star reverse is the most obtainable die variety of the many 1798 half eagles but it is scarce in properly graded AU55-58, especially with natural color.

This is an uncommonly choice piece for the grade with natural green-gold and russet color over lustrous, choice surfaces. The strike is a bit irregular which is understandable when you note the various die cracks on both sides. I can't imagine a significantly nicer AU55 1798 half eagle than this.

A CAC approved PCGS AU55 1798 Large 8, 13 Star reverse sold for $19,975 as Heritage 11/14: 3966 and this coin was far less original than the current piece. A non-CAC PCGS AU55 realized $21,150 as Stacks Bowers 2014 ANA: 3966.

This is a wonderful example for either the date or type collector.

CAC has approved 9 in this grade with 15 finer.
