"SUPER SLIDER" 1876-S QUARTER EAGLE

Only 5,000 1876-S quarter eagles were made and this date is the last San Francisco issue of this denomination which can be considered scarce. It is likely that a small hoard existed at one time as there are a number of AU55-MS62 1876-S quarter eagles known with a basically similar appearance.

This coin could just as easily have been graded MS61 by NGC as it has full, creamy luster below natural rose and orange-gold hues and just the slightest hint of rub on the obverse.  The strike is sharp and what appears to be a mark on Liberty's face is actually a mint-made "bar" which is seen on all 1876-S quarter eagles.

The last two NGC AU58 1876-S quarter eagles to sell at auction realized $1,821 in September 2016 and $1,880 in October 2014. Neither coin was approved by CAC and neither was accorded a "plus" grade.

CAC has approved 13 in AU58 (with this one in 58+) plus 3 in grades above this.
