RARE PCGS/CAC AU58 1885-CC DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1885-CC is one of just four Type Three Carson City double eagles which can rightfully be termed as scarce in nearly any grade, along with the 1878-CC, 1879-CC and 1891-CC. There were just 9,450 struck with many later melted and most survivors showing signs of heavy commerce.

This lustrous slider is among the more pleasing AU58 examples of this date that I have seen or offered. Th wear is limited to some cabinet friction on the portrait and the surfaces are uncommonly free of the usual abrasions. Both sides are well-defined and have taken on pleasing natural golden-orange hues with some slight deepening of the color at the reverse border.

Only one PCGS AU58 has sold at auction since late 2012 (actually a 58+) and it realized $28,200 as Heritage 1/16: 5657. It was not approved by CAC.

If you can even locate a PCGS MS61 1885-CC double eagle, it is likely to run in excess of $40,000; probably more if it is approved by CAC.

An important CC double eagle for the advanced specialist.

CAC has approved 5 in this grade with 3 finer.
