SCARCE CIVIL WAR ISSUE 1864 DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1864 is the third scarcest Civil War double eagle from Philadelphia, after the 1862 and the 1863. It is not often seen in grades below AU50 and those which grade in the VF-EF range tend to be very low end examples.

This piece is totally fresh to the market and I feel it is closer in quality to the AU50 level than its current EF45. It is lightly abraded, evenly worn and has some luster remaining on both sides.

Only one PCGS EF45 1864 double eagle has appeared at auction since June 2008; housed in an old green label holder it realized a strong $8,813 as Heritage 2/14: 5520.

It has become nearly impossible to find nice, problem-free PCGS graded 1864 double eagles for less than $7,500.
