RARE AU50 1859 DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1859 lays strong claim to being the rarest regular issue P mint double eagle from the Type One (1850-1865) design. it is not often seen in any grade and most of the available pieces that fall into the EF45 to AU53 range are low end due to excessive marks and unoriginal color.

This fresh-to-the-market example shows nice, even medium russet color on both sides. The surfaces are moderately abraded and there is enough luster present to more than justify the assigned grade.

The last AU50 example of this issue to sell at auction was an NGC piece which brought $12,925 as Heritage 2015 ANA: 6365. No PCGS AU50's have sold since 2012 although an outstanding gold CAC piece in an old PCGS 50 holder brought a strong $19,975 as Heritage 2016: 4349.

In my opinion, this date is undervalued when compared to the scarce Civil War trio of P mint Type One dates (the 1862, 1863 and 1864) and this is an especially nice coin for the grade.
