VERY RARE LIKELY CONDITION CENSUS 1864 EAGLE, PCGS AU55

The 1864 is not only popular as a Civil War issue; it is also among the dozen rarest issues in the entire Liberty Head eagle series. It is estimated that only 40-50 are known from the original mintage of just 3,530 business strikes and most are in the VF-EF range. This date is very rare in About Uncirculated with fewer than 10 known and I am aware of just a single Uncirculated piece, graded MS61 by PCGS.

This is the best 1864 eagle that I have offered for sale in over a decade; looking back at my records, I have sold just a single AU (a PCGS 50) since 2010. It is well-struck and lustrous with natural golden-russet color which shades to rose when the coin is tilted towards a light source. As on essentially every known piece, this example shows some abrasions from handling but none are deep or detracting.

Only one PCGS AU55 1864 eagle has sold at auction since 1999 and it brought $41,125 as Lot 10222 in Stacks Bowers October, 2014 event. Since 2004, only a single NGC AU55 1864 eagle has sold at auction and it realized $28,200 as Heritage 1/14: 6878. In my opinion, neither of these two coins was choice as the example offered here.

This date is missing from many advanced sets of Liberty Head eagles and Civil War gold coins and it is important to note that only one other PCGS AU55 has been available to collectors in over 16 years!
