CHOICE AU 1855-O GOLD DOLLAR

The 1855-O is numismatically significant as the only Type Two gold dollar made in New Orleans as well as being the final year of issue from New Orleans for this denomination. It is more available than its southern counterparts, the 1855-C and 1855-D and this makes it very popular with collectors.

Unlike the majority of 1855-O dollars, this piece has not been scrubbed and/or brightened. It shows nice even greenish-gold color with some reddish-orange underlying hues. The strike is sharp save for weakness on the top loop of the 8 in the date while the surfaces lack the typical marks that plague this issue.

The last NGC AU58 1855-O gold dollar to sell at auction brought $3,700 as DLRC 4/16: 7314.

This is just about the best available quality for the issue at less than $4,000 and it still represents good value in the very completable New Orleans gold dollar set.
