SURPRISINGLY SCARCE PCGS/CAC MS64 1883 HALF EAGLE

While common in the lower Uncirculated grades, the 1883 half eagle is not often seen in properly graded MS64 and it is genuinely rare in MS65 and above. Most of the pieces graded MS64 are too ticky to be approved by CAC and this is evidenced by this date's low CAC population in higher grades.

This borderline Gem is unprocessed with thick, frosty luster seen beneath rich natural orange-gold color. There are a few grade-limiting scuffs in the upper left obverse while the reverse is fully Gem on its own.

The only other PCGS/CAC MS64 1883 half eagle to sell at auction brought $2,243.

This coin seems like excellent value to me.

CAC has approved three in this grade with just one finer (MS65).
