CONDITION CENSUS 1859-S HALF EAGLE

The 1859-S is an unheralded but legitimately rare No Motto half eagle from San Francisco with an original mintage of 13,220. There are an estimated 65-75 with most grading below AU50. In the higher AU grades, this is a rare issue and I am aware of two or three in Uncirculated including the Milas/Bass coin which grades PCGS MS62.

This bright, lustrous example shows mild wear which is confined to the high spots on the obverse. The color is an appealing pale orange-gold with soft pink underflashes at the edges. A small scrape to the left of the mintmark is not as severe as the accompanying images show and the strike is exceptional for a San Francisco half eagle of this era.

The last PCGS AU58 1859-S half eagle to sell at auction was all the way back in May, 2001 when Goldberg 5/01: 1395 brought $7,475. A number of APR's for NGC AU58's exist (generally in the $8,000-9,000 range) but these are mostly for the same coin and not for an example as choice as the present piece.

With the two Uncirculated 1859-S half eagles which I am aware of off the market in tightly-held collections, this piece is likely the finest available to advanced half eagle collectors.

CAC has approved 2 in this grade with 1 finer (MS62).
