BORDERLINE GEM 1855 QUARTER EAGLE

While fairly common in the lower Uncirculated grades, the 1855 quarter eagle is scarce in MS64 and very rare in Gem. I haven’t seen a whole lot of MS64′s but the ones I have seen tend to be “marky” and obviously dipped. Nice, properly graded pieces are clearly rare.

This lovely, fresh-to-the-market example is the second best 1855 quarter eagle I have handled in recent years, trailing only the lovely Gem PCGS/CAC MS65 I sold last year to a Southern collector. The piece I offer here is very high end and totally unadulterated with nice natural yellow-gold color, thick mint frost and razor-sharp detail. A few tiny ticks in the left obverse narrowly (and I stress narrowly) keep this coin from a full MS65 grade.

An NGC/CAC MS64 sold for $3,290 as Heritage 3/13: 4122.

At less than $5,000, this coin is excellent value as are many antebellum issues in higher grades.

CAC has approved three in MS64 (including this one in MS64+) and one finer (MS65).
