The low mintage 1852-C (9,772 were struck) is the seventh rarest of 20 quarter eagles struck at this mint. It is very scarce in properly graded AU50 and above and quite rare with original color and surfaces.

This totally original example exhibits very pleasing deep mustard-gold color and has uncommonly good eye appeal for the date. It is, as always, weakly struck at the centers but there is a substantial amount of luster and dirt encrusted in the protected areas on both sides. A grade of AU53 to AU55 would not be out of the question if not for a thin reverse scratch from the base of the O in OF to the eagle’s head.

The last PCGS AU50 to sell at auction was the vastly inferior non-CAC example offered as Lot 1207 in DLRC’s 4/09 online sale; it brought $3,910. Only four PCGS AU50′s have sold at auction since 2005 and none were approved by CAC.

Choice 1852-C quarter eagles are almost never offered for sale and this is the nicest I have handled in over a year.

CAC has approved just this one coin in AU50 with two finer (AU58 and MS62)
