The 1847-D is one of the more available quarter eagles from this mint but no Dahlonega issue of this denomination can be easily located in properly graded AU58, especially with nice color and surfaces.

I have handled a few exceptional AU58 examples of this date and while this piece doesn’t have as rich color as some I’ve had, the hues are still deep and attractive with nice medium orange-gold and russet hues, in slightly different configurations, on the obverse and reverse. The strike is sharp and there is a good degree of luster seen. A few small marks behind Liberty’s bun do not detract.

The last slabbed AU58 to sell at auction was Heritage 1/13: 688, graded by NGC, which brought $5,875. Heritage 5/12: 4789, graded by PCGS and in an old holder, sold for a strong $6,325. Neither of these coins were approved by CAC.

A pleasing, high grade circulated Dahlonega quarter eagle for the date collector or the type collector.

CAC has approved nine in this grade with only one finer (MS62).
