BORDERLINE GEN 1878 HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

The 1878 half eagle is common in grades up through MS63 but it is scarce in properly graded MS64 and very rare in Gem Uncirculated. PCGS has only graded five in MS65 plus two in MS66.

I bought this coin as is and was too pressed for time to re-submit it to PCGS but I wouldn't be surprised if it was in an MS64+ holder some day as it is really a choice piece. It is frosty and undipped with nice light rose-gold color and a minimal amount of abrasions. The reverse, in fact, is a full Gem.

Heritage 7/13: 5187, a CAC approved PCGS MS64+, sold for $5,581 and it is the only CAC approved high grade 1878 half eagle to be offered in some time. An NGC MS64+ without CAC approval sold for $5,640 in September 2016.

If one were available, a PCGS MS65 1878 half eagle might bring in excess of $10,000 and for most collectors it would represent an overbuy.

CAC has approved six in this grade (including at least one in MS64+) with just one finer.
