CAC APPROVED 1874-CC HALF EAGLE GRADED EF40 BY PCGS

The 1874-CC is the most obtainable early date half eagle from the Carson City mint. It is sometimes available in the EF40 to AU50 range but most pieces show poor strikes and stripped surfaces.

This nice example is housed in an older holder and it seems somewhat conservatively graded to me as it retains a considerable amount of luster. The surfaces are lightly marked and show pleasing light russet and reddish-gold coloration.

No straight-graded PCGS EF40 example of this date has sold at auction since September 2010 when a piece in an old holder brought a strong $6,325 in a Heritage sale. An average quality non-CAC NGC EF40 realized $4,406 as Heritage 3/14: 30331.

CAC has approved two in this grade with 22 finer.
