RARE PCGS MS61 1850-C HALF EAGLE

Strong Mintmark variety.

There are as many as a dozen Uncirculated 1850-C half eagles known (some as nice as MS63 to MS64) but this is misleading as some have a weak or nearly invisible mintmark. Unfortunately, both grading services have done a poor job distinguishing these from their sharp mintmark counterparts.

This coin is totally fresh to the market and it appears extremely choice for the grade with strong claims to the MS62 level. Both sides are overlaid with soft, frosty mint luster and display gorgeous natural orange-gold color which is distinctive and absolutely correct for this issue. There is absolutely no trace of wear or friction on the high spots and the obverse fields lack the breaks in luster that you would expect to see on a gradeflated slider.

The last APR for a PCGS MS61 example of this date was back in May 2008 when Goldberg sold a coin for $9,250.

This would be an absolutely perfect Charlotte half eagle for the collector searching for a single high grade piece for type purposes.
