OUTSTANDING CAC APPROVED NGC MS63 1844-O HALF EAGLE

The 1844-O half eagle is far and away the most available No Motto New Orleans half eagle. It is only slightly scarce in the lowest Uncirculated range but it is very scarce in properly graded MS63, very rare in MS64, and probably unique in MS65. A single Proof exists and when this finally comes to market, it will no doubt set a record price for a New Orleans half eagle.

This coin is housed in a much older holder and I feel it is very choice for the assigned grade; certainly a strong candidate to grade MS63+ if not MS64. The best feature about this coin is its blatant originality with nice medium orange-gold color over clean, frosty surfaces. The portrait has some die rust which offers a nice contrast to the silky fields. This is a really handsome coin which rates as among the nicer 1844-O half eagles I have handled (and I have handled nearly every piece known in MS63 and higher).

The last CAC approved NGC MS63 1844-O half eagle to sell at auction was the Newman V: 3286 coin which sold cheaply for $11,163 in November 2014. I didn’t care for that coin as an MS63 and the present piece is far nicer, in my opinion.

This would make a great coin for the advanced specialist searching for a really special No Motto half eagle from New Orleans.

CAC has approved five in this grade with three finer.
