SCARCE 1843-O SMALL LETTERS $5.00

Small Letters variety; noted by PCGS.

Varieties of 1843-O half eagles are known with the Small Letters reverse (as used in 1840 and 1842) and the Large Letters (as used on the 1844 and later No Motto issues). The former is much scarcer with around 125-150 known in total, mostly in lower grades.

This is an early die state with full radial lines noted on the stars, strong lettering on the reverse and no major die cracks. The color is a pleasing medium russet with a distinguishing deeper splash at the 43 in the date and, to a lesser extent, at the left obverse border. There are a few shallow marks around stars four and five but the naked-eye appearance is excellent.

Only one PCGS AU50 1843-O Small Letters half eagle has sold at auction since May 2004 and it sold very reasonably (to me) at $2,585 as Stacks Bowers 10/14: 5383.

This date is seldom seen in affordable collector grades and it has been sometime since I have had a nicer 1843-O Small Letters half eagle in stock.
