COLLECTOR GRADE CAC APPROVED 1842-O HALF EAGLE

The 1842-O is the second rarest half eagle from New Orleans, trailing only the 1847-O. Around 60-70 are known, mostly in VF and EF grades.

This natural green-gold example has the detail of a near-EF coin but there is and old semi-elliptical scratch in the right obverse field and a bit of roughness in the fields. The naked-eye appearance is still better than average for the date and grade.

No VF35 example of this date has appeared for sale at auction since June 2010.

CAC has approved 3 in this grade with 8 finer.
