RARE UNCIRCULATED 1842-D SMALL DATE HALF EAGLE

Variety 7-H; Small Date as designated by PCGS.

Unlike the issues struck later in the decade, the early date Dahlonega half eagles were not saved and as a result, most are very rare in Uncirculated. The 1842-D Small Date likely has no more than 10 or so known in Uncirculated with virtually all in the MS60 to MS62 range.

This fully lustrous example seems nicer than assigned grade and when I purchased it, I felt it had a really good chance to upgrade to MS61. Both sides are very lightly abraded and show pleasing yellow-gold color. The 1842-D Small Date is among the hardest Dahlonega half eagles to locate with nice color and pleasing surfaces and while "only" an MS60, this piece is actually among the best I have handled in the last decade.

This exact coin (see below for the provenance) is the only PCGS MS60 to sell at auction and the last PCGS MS61 sold all the way back in 2003. An NGC MS61 sold twice in 2012 for $10,350 (5/12) and $10,638 (2/12).

This attractive coin is not far removed from the tail end of the Condition Census and it represents an important opportunity for the advanced Dahlonega half eagle specialist to acquire a far above-average example of a rare, overlooked issue.

Ex Heritage 4/18: 4354 where it realized $11,400.
