SCARCE PCGS MS62+ 1864 THREE DOLLARS

Just 2,630 business strikes were made and the 1864 is a popular Civil War issue with demand that extends outside of the Three Dollar specialist community. It is comparable in overall rarity to the 1863 but it is scarcer in the MS62 and higher range.

This frosty yellow-gold example is uncommonly well-defined and it lacks any clashmarks. It does show a number of vertical basining lines in the fields and this is seen on Philadelphia gold coinage in most denominations dated 1864. A strong case can be made for grading this coin a full MS63 but there are some small ticks in the upper left obverse field which likely kept PCGS from assigning this grade.

No PCGS MS62+ 1864 Three Dollars has ever sold at auction. Since 2006, there are six APRs for PCGS MS62s ranging from a low of $9,400 to a high of $11,500.

Ex Stack's Bowers 3/18: 2264 (as PCGS MS62) where it realized $9,600.
