DESIRABLE BORDERLINE GEM CAC APPROVED 1855 THREE DOLLAR

The 1855 is among the more available dates of this design in the low to medium Uncirculated grades but it is scarce in properly graded MS64 and very rare in Gem. PCGS has graded four in MS65 and the Pogue coin, optimistically graded MS66, is likely the finest known.

This exceptional borderline Gem has impeccable surfaces which approximate what you would see (or not see!) on a Gem. The color is a pleasing deep orange-gold with contrasting reddish tints at much of the obverse border. A few wispy lines in the left obverse field narrowly remove this coin from a Gem grade and a $25,000 price tag.

Two different PCGS MS64+ 1855 Three Dollar Gold Pieces have appeared at auction: this coin (see below) and another that realized $16,216 as Heritage 12/10: 4381.

If you are putting together a high grade PCGS/CAC set of Threes, you’ll likely not find a better 1855 than this.

CAC has approved 10 in MS64 (this includes at least one in MS64+) plus one finer.

Ex Stack’s Bowers 10/15: 63 ($11,163), Heritage 2013 ANA: 5818 ($15,275).
