VERY RARE GEM PROOF 1885 QUARTER EAGLE

For the date, just 887 1885 quarter eagles were made: 87 Proofs and 800 for circulation. Of the 87 Proofs, around half exist but an abnormally high number of these are impaired. There are probably no more than six or so Gems known and only a few of these are Deep cameo.

This wonderful Gem Proof shows strong contrast and is free of any significant hairlines. Both sides have nice natural medium orange-gold color and there are no lintmarks. A pair of carbon spots at the first star are as made and serve as identification.

An NGC PR65 example of this date sold for $34,500 as Legend 12/13: 284 while a CAC approved PCGS PR65 in a pre-designation holder realized $35,200 as Heritage 10/12: 5653.

This is an important Condition Census quality example of an important date in the quarter eagle series.

This is the only PR65DCAM approved by CAC, three finer have been approved as well (two in 66 and one in 67).
