RARE PCGS MS61 1867 QUARTER EAGLE

The rarity of the 1867 has been misunderstood for many years but third-party grading statistics have proven that this issue is actually among the most difficult Liberty Head quarter eagles to locate. There are probably not more than 60-70 known in total with around four to six in Uncirculated. The single finest is an amazing PCGS MS65 in the Kansas Collection which was last sold in early 1999.

This coin comes from an original 1867 gold set which I purchased via private treaty. The obverse grades at least MS63 to MS64 and is remarkable; the reverse shows some grade-limiting hairlines, not from cleaning but from contact with the storage box this coin came with. PCGS has effectively net graded this coin as they were right to do but it is interesting to note just how nice the obverse is!

Since 1999, only three Uncirculated 1867 quarter eagles graded by PCGS have been auctioned and the most recent brought $25,850 in April 2017; it was graded MS64 and represented an excellent value, in my opinion.

This is the first Uncirculated 1867 quarter eagle I have offered in years and it should be eagerly appreciated by specialized collectors.
