VERY RARE AND CHOICE PCGS AU55 1871-CC DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1871-CC is the rarest collectable Carson City double eagle, given the fact that the rarest issue (the iconic 1870-CC) is a $300,000+ investment. At least 95% of the known 1871-CC double eagles grade VF-EF and properly graded AU’s are rare. This date becomes very rare in AU55 to AU58 and it is an extreme rarity in Uncirculated with just one or two known.

This is the first 1871-CC I have offered in a grade higher than AU50 in close to a decade. It is fresh to the market and very solid for the grade with lovely fully natural russet and green-gold color. This piece likely isn’t from an overseas hoard as it doesn’t have the dark hues on the relief details seen on pieces from these sources. The surfaces are clean with the only marks worthy of note located in the central right obverse field. The reverse of this coin is extremely choice and I grade it AU58+ on its own.

The last PCGS AU55 1871-CC to sell at auction was offered all the way back in January 2010. The last three APR’s for NGC AU55’s are $62,500 (11/17), $61,900 (4/17) and $64,625 (101/6)

It is interesting to note that PCGS has still graded a grand total of zero AU58 examples of this date. NGC AU58’s, while seemingly more plentiful, have been unseen at auction since May 2009.

If you collect Carson City double eagles, the 1871-CC is likely a glaring hole in your set. This very pleasing piece is probably the only PCGS AU55 which will come available in many years and it is among the more important coins I have offered so far in 2019.
