SCARCE PCGS AU58 1870 DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1870 is the second most difficult Philadelphia Type Two double eagle to locate after the 1868. It is scarce in properly graded AU58 and it is rare in Uncirculated.

Unlike most 1870 double eagles graded AU58, this piece show natural color with rich rose and yellow-gold hues shimmering on the obverse and the reverse. The surfaces are far less abraded than usual for the date with just a few scuffs in the left obverse worth noting.

There are four APR's for this date since early 2014 (two NGC and two PCGS) and these range from a low of $7,050 to a high of $7,800.

If you can even find a nice PCGS MS61 1870 $20 it will cost around $17,500 which makes this AU58 seem like good value for most colllectors.
