1867 DOUBLE EAGLE GRADED MS61 BY PCGS

Nearly every known 1867 double eagle in higher grades comes from European hoards which contain coins grading from AU55 to MS62. These coins are characterized by great luster and color but abrasion-plagued surfaces.

This rose, green-gold and orange example is strictly "new" with no wear and only some minor bag friction seen on the obverse. It is well struck and very frosty with choicer surfaces than usual for this issue.

The most recent APR for a PCGS MS61 1867 double eagle is a low $5,170 set by Heritage 10/16: 5555 but this example was extremely low end for the grade. Stacks Bowers 3/16: 14347 was much choicer and it brought $7,050.

This would make a nice Type Two type coin for the collector who wants a scarcer but still affordable issue to fill this slot.
