VERY RARE NGC/CAC AU55 1866-S NO MOTTO DOUBLE EAGLE

No Motto variety.

The 1866-S No Motto is one of the two rarest Liberty Head double eagles from the San Francisco mint along with the 1861-S Paquet. It is recorded that 120,000 No Motto double eagles dated 1866-S were struck but I believe that this number includes many of the With Motto coins of this year. There are around 200 known in all grades with the majority in the EF40 to AU50 range. Properly graded AU55 and AU58 examples are very rare and this date is exceedingly rare in Uncirculated. The finest known is a sole PCGS MS62 which was found as part of the incredible Saddle Ridge Hoard; it was offered for sale at $1,000,000.

If you have been actively searching for a higher grade 1866-S No Motto double eagle you are no doubt aware at how hard it is to locate one with good eye appeal. This frosty yellow-gold piece is comparatively attractive for the issue with good luster, limited wear and a reasonably sharp strike. The obverse is the choicer of the two sides with good overall detail and nice clean fields; the reverse is semi-reflective (which is unusual for the issue) and shows some minor scuffing in the fields. This is a difficult piece to properly image but I assure you it is an impressive coin in hand.

A PCGS AU55 with CAC approval sold for $88,125 as Stacks Bowers 11/13: 2235. That coin and the one offered here (see below for full provenance) are the only to AU55's with CAC approval to ever sell at auction.

I have seen inferior 1866-S No Motto double eagles in AU58 holders and this is the single best example I have offered for sale in years.

CAC has approved 2 in this grade with 4 finer.

Ex Heritage 4/14: 5819 where it sold for $64,625.
