PCGS/CAC AU53 1865-S DOUBLE EAGLE

Large S mintmark.

The 1865-S is the most common SF mint double eagle from the Civil War era. It is plentiful in higher grades due to shipwrecks. Most non-shipwreck pieces are dipped and abraded.

This choice piece is notable for its intense reddish-orange colors which are present on both sides. A few marks in the fields limit the grade but the eye appeal is excellent for the grade.

Surprisingly, no PCGS AU53 has sold at auction since early 2011 when an example without CAC approval realized $2,645 in a Heritage sale.

An affordable coin with far more character than most 1865-S double eagles.

CAC has approved 16 in this grade with 85 finer.
