CHOICE CAC APPROVED PCGS 1861 DOUBLE EAGLE

By virtue of its high mintage, the 1861 is among the most available Type One double eagles. But because it isn't a shipwreck date, it is scarce in properly graded MS62 to MS63 and rare approaching the Gem level. Most pieces in MS62 holders have been dipped or otherwise brightened.

This deep orange-gold and rose example is totally original and the surfaces are very clean for the date and grade. A cluster of scuffs in the upper left obverse field preclude a higher grade but this piece is choice and has extremely good overall eye appeal. The reverse is a full MS63 by itself.

Three non-CAC PCGS MS62 examples sold in 2017-2018 for $7,050 and a CAC approved PCGS MS62 realized $9,400 as Stacks Bowers 2016 ANA: 2441.

If available, a PCGS/CAC MS63 example of this date would cost $15,000+ and I feel that MS62 is the best value grade for the 1861 $20.

CAC has approved 17 in this grade with 12 finer.

Ex Stacks Bowers 6/18: 193 at $6,900, "Fairmont" Collection.
