FRESH, ATTRACTIVE PCGS/CAC MS61 1860 $20.00

As recently as a few decades ago, Uncirculated 1860 double eagles were very rare. After a few dozen have been uncovered in European vaults this is no loner the case but nice MS61 examples of this date are about the best most collectors can hope for and properly graded MS62 to MS63 pieces are rare and expensive.

This very fresh example has great rose and green-gold color and it is strictly "new" with no signs of wear or traces of friction on the high spots. I have seen inferior 1860 double eagles in MS62 holders and the only thing which holds this example back from that level, in my opinion are some light scuffs in the upper left obverse field.

The last APR for a PCGS MS61 1860 $20 is Heritage 3/17: 24245 which realized $7,931 and was for a non-CAC coin.

In my opinion, MS61 is a practical grade for this date as an MS62, if available, is expensive and MS63 and finer coins are an overbuy for all but a small number of collectors.

CAC has approved 11 in this grade with 6 finer.
