EXCEPTIONAL PCGS/CAC AU58+ 1859 DOUBLE EAGLE

The two rarest Philadelphia Type One double eagles are the 1859 and the 1862. In my opinion, the 1859 is a hair rarer than the 1862 when it comes to choice, higher grade pieces extent. I am aware of no more than three or four truly nice AU 1859 double eagles as well as another three or four which grade Uncirculated. The clear finest known is the Hansen-Crawford PCGS MS62 with the next finest being an NGC MS62 which sold for $37,375 all the way back in 2004.

The best analogy I can make with this exceptional coin is that if you covered the date, you would think it is an 1860 or an 1861. The 1859 just doesn't "come nice" as 99% of the survivors are excessively abraded and most have been stripped. The present example is very frosty with rich natural orange-gold and rose color which is contrasted by some deeper hues at the borders. The surfaces lack the usual deep, heavy marks with a few random ticks on Liberty's chin mentioned for accuracy. On the reverse, there are a few small black spots which are in the planchet and are as made. This coin has great overall eye appeal and I believe it is the single finest circulated 1859 double eagle I have ever seen or handled.

There is another PCGS AU58+ 1859 double eagle known (not approved by CAC) which I was offered by a Florida firm last year for $32,500 which wasn't nearly as nice as this piece. I bought an NGC MS61 in the Heritage 2017 FUN Sale for $35,250 (which I quickly flipped for a large profit) which was nice but not as original as this.

If you are a serious collector of Liberty Head double eagles and you need an 1859, this is the exact coin that you have been waiting for.

CAC has approved three in AU58 (including this 58+) with only one finer.
