RARE PCGS AU55 1857-O DOUBLE EAGLE

Only 30,000 were struck and the 1857-O is similar in overall and high grade rarity to its counterpart the 1858-O double eagle. There are an estimated 200-250 known of the 1857-O and this date becomes rare in properly graded AU55. There are just seven or eight in Uncirculated and I just paid $78,000 for a PCGS MS60 in the 6/18 Stacks Bowers Baltimore auction.

This solid example is well-detailed and lustrous with medium golden-orange color seen on both sides. This coin doesn't have dark Euro color but it hasn't been scrubbed as have most AU-graded 1857-O double eagles. In addition, the surfaces are free of the detracting scuffs seen on nearly all known examples of this date. On this, the only mark of note is an obverse scrape from a denticle into the field at 2:00.

No PCGS AU55 has sold at auction since the 2010 ANA while the most recent NGC AU55 brought $19,388 as Heritage 2017 FUN: 5989.

This date is almost never seen finer than AU55 and if one were available, a PCGS AU58 would easily bring well over $30,000. An important coin for the advanced Double Eagle specialist.
