SCARCE CAC APPROVED PCGS AU58 1856 $20

The 1856 $20 has become a far more available issue than in the past due to hoards but most of the pieces which have come onto the market grade AU55 or lower. Properly graded AU58’s remain tough to locate and Uncirculated 1856 double eagles are still quite rare.

This is among the nicer AU58 1856 $20’s I can recall seeing with fully original surfaces, rich natural color and no actual wear. A long but thin scuff on the face of Liberty is the only detracting mark.

The last two PCGS/CAC AU58 examples of this date sold for $4,560 (8/18) and $6,300 (6/18). I regularly sold nice AU58 1856 $20’s in the $5,000-6,000 range as recently as mid-2017.

The hoard of Liberty Head double eagles which entered the market earlier in 2018 represents an opportunity for the savvy collector to purchase exceptional pieces at fair prices.

Ex Stack’s Bowers 10/18: 1438 ($4,320), Fairmont Collection.

CAC has approved 18 in this grade with just 5 finer.
