RARE PCGS/CAC AU55 1854 LARGE DATE DOUBLE EAGLE

Varieties of 1854 double eagles are known with a Small Date and a Large Date. The latter is dozens of time rarer and the 1854 Large Date is almost never seen in grades above AU55 to AU58.

This is an outstanding example of this variety with a lovely 100% original appearance which is the result of its strictly original surfaces. Both the obverse and the reverse sport rich natural russet hues and the surfaces are choice save for two small contact marks on Liberty’s face.

The most recent relevant APR for an AU55 with CAC approval is Heritage 4/18: 4389 which brought $15,600; it was graded by NGC and was a bit less choice than the current example. No PCGS AU55 has sold since Stack’s Bowers 5/15: 75 and that example, which brought $16,450, had a very detracting planchet streak across the obverse.

This is the best available quality for this popular issue at less than $20,000 and it represents the nicest AU55 1854 Large Date $20 I have offered for sale in a few years.

CAC has approved 13 in this grade with 14 finer.
