RARE PCGS MS62 1889 EAGLE

The mintage of just 4,440 business strikes is the lowest of any Liberty Head eagle struck after 1883 at any mint and the lowest at Philadelphia after 1877. The 1889 is a curiously overlooked issue which is unknown in grades above MS62 and very scarce at this level.

The obverse is much cleaner than normal for this often baggy issue and it shows nice mint frost below light natural rose-gold shadings; the reverse exhibits a few scuffs in the fields but has extraordinary reddish-orange hues at the border from 2:00 to 8:00. A small black grease stain on the obverse is mint-made and it doesn’t detract.

Not including this coin, there are but two auction records for PCGS MS62 1889 eagles since 2007. In early 2012, Heritage sold an example for $5,463 while Stacks Bowers sold a different example for $6,300.

As later date Liberty Head eagles become more popular, collectors will be alerted to the true scarcity of the 1889 and I expect prices to rise accordingly.
