CONDITIONALLY SCARCE PCGS MS63 1888-O EAGLE

After a five year hiatus, coinage of Eagles at the New Orleans mint resumed in 1888. This issue is very common in grades through MS62. MS63 examples are scarce and this date is essentially unknown finer with just a single coin graded MS64—and no Gems.

This piece is fresh to the market and it has crisp, frosty luster with attractive natural yellow-gold color. There is a slightly “busy” area in the left obverse field with a few contact marks visible but all else is clean and choice and this piece is clearly choice for the grade and date.

Since late 2015, only three PCGS MS63 1888-O eagles have sold at auction, and they have realized $6,500 (12/18), $8,400 (2/18), and $6,169 (4/16).

A nice piece which would fit well into a high grade With Motto New Orleans eagle short set.
