LOVELY BORDERLINE GEM PCGS/CAC MS64 1880 $10

With very few exceptions Gem quality With Motto eagles are virtually unavailable until the 1890’s dates and most of the issues from the 1870’s and the early 1880’s are unknown above MS64. The 1880 is very scarce in properly graded MS64 and the only Gem I have ever seen was a PCGS MS65+ which brought $31,200 as Heritage 4/18: 4375.

This is the nicest 1880 eagle I have offered for sale and it is characterized by thick, frosty luster and splendid natural rose and orange-gold colors on the obverse and the reverse. Both sides are very clean with a few ticks in the left obverse field and on Liberty’s chin narrowly removing this coin from Gem status and a huge increase in price.

The two most recent comparable APRs are Heritage 2/18: 5846 for a non-CAC OGH PCGS MS64 at $7,800, and $7,638 for a CAC approved PCGS MS64+ offered as Legend 10/17: 501.

This piece is ideal for the advanced date collector of Liberty Head eagles who wants a special 1880 but sees no sense in paying the $30,000 required to own a PCGS/CAC Gem.

CAC has approved 9 in MS64/MS64+ with 2 finer (both MS65).
