SCARCE PCGS MS62 1874 EAGLE

Every With Motto eagle struck between 1862 and 1873 is either unknown or exceedingly rare in Uncirculated. The 1874 is somewhat available in Uncirculated with perhaps as many as three dozen known but most are in the MS60 to MS62 range. There are at least five or six in MS64 and another two or three Gems but these are expensive and seldom offered for sale.

This fresh-to-the-market example has a great naked-eye appearance with natural light green-gold, rose and orange hues seen on top of very frosty surfaces. A few minor scuffs in the fields limit the grade but this is a really good looking coin.

There have been three APRs since early 2009 for non-CAC PCGS MS62 1874 eagles; these are $4,348 (9/15), $4,025 (4/11) and $4,313 (3/09).

If you can locate a finer 1874, you’ll have to spend in the mid $20s as PCGS has yet to grade any examples in MS63 and just four in MS64.
