AN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION CENSUS 1872 EAGLE

From 1872 to 1877, most of the eagles made at the Philadelphia mint are celebrated low-mintage rarities. Despite a tiny mintage of 1,620 business strikes, the 1872 tends to be overshadowed by comparatively rare (but even lower mintage) issues such as the 1873, 1876 and the 1877. There are fewer than 50 business strike 1872 eagles known and--almost miraculously--this includes three in Uncirculated led by the famous Warren Miller coin graded MS64 by PCGS which sold for $46,750 all the way back in 1995.

This fresh-to-the-market example is one of the best circulated 1872 eagles in existence. It is uncleaned and original with rich rose and orange-gold color atop semi-prooflike surfaces. Most 1872 eagles are very heavily abraded and this is a welcome exception as the surfaces are very choice. Even the most finicky collector is going to appreciate the appearance of this splendid coin and this is saying something as the 1872 eagle is not an issue that the advanced specialist can expect to come nice.

There is one other PCGS/CAC AU58 1872 eagle known and it sold for $38,188 as Heritage 2014 ANA: 5669. I examined that coin carefully and I can honestly state that the coin I am offering here is every bit as nice--if not even nicer.

None of the Uncirculated 1872 eagles I mentioned above have been available since 2003 and the present example is likely the best that will be offered to serious collectors. This is one of the more important Liberty Head eagles I have offered so far in 2017 and I can not overstate its importance.

CAC has approved 2 in this grade with none finer. Only 3 in total have been approved.
